The suburb was part of Newstead from 1975 until 2010 where it was defined as its own separate suburb. Teneriffe is surrounded by the Brisbane River, Newstead, New Farm, and Fortitude Valley.

A ferry terminal helps residents across the river. Reliable bus transportation can be found running throughout the area. While there is no train station within Teneriffe, the residents can easily access Fortitude Valley train station.

Teneriffe Festival is hosted in July each year, to celebrate its rich history. The festival attracts 50,000 people to food vendors, musical performances, dedicated kid stalls, community group and 60 other market stalls for the guests to enjoy.
