A green, riverside suburb within the City of Brisbane. It started as a farming district but has developed into a prestigious residential suburb known for its old-world charm, cinemas, parks and café scene. Situated 6.5km east of Brisbane’s CBD, Hawthorne shares a border with Bulimba, Balmoral, Morningside and Norman Park. The suburb provides a safe and comfortable environment for its community to enjoy and covers an area of only 1.6 square kilometers.

As at the 2021 Census, Hawthorne had a population of 5,090 people of whom 50.5% were female and 49.5% were male. The median age of Hawthorne residents was 34 with a median weekly household income of $2,410. 71.3% of people living in Hawthorne were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 69.8%. The other most common countries of birth were England (5.1%), New Zealand (3.9%), Scotland (0.9%), the United States (0.9%), and South Africa (0.8%). Hawthorne primarily consists of separate houses (60%) and only 27% of dwellings are flats/apartments.

Hawthorne is well serviced by public transport. It hosts a heritage listed ferry wharf where the CityCat runs regular services. There are also several bus stops in key locations and buses running frequently. The suburb is also in close proximity to Morningside railway station.

Lourdes Hill College is a well-known and established Catholic secondary school for girls located in Hawthorne. Many other primary and secondary schools are located in the neighbouring suburbs of Bulimba, Morningside and Balmoral.

The Hawthorne Cinema complex, on Hawthorne Road, is a classic theatre opened in the 1940s and is one of the oldest remaining cinemas in Brisbane. It contains a large curved screen one of the largest in Brisbane and is surrounded by restaurants and cafés. Hawthorne has several parks, including the hugely popular Hawthorne Park which is 6.9 hectares. It includes play and exercise equipment, a running track and plenty of areas to enjoy a picnic or one of the popular food trucks. A favourite for locals is a visit to Hawthorne Garage to pick up a coffee or lunch from the deli, or just some amazing fresh produce.
